No Love for Wiggins?
There have been a lot of talks recently between the Cavaliers and the Timberwolves, concerning a potential Kevin Love trade. The 25-year-old former UCLA Bruin has made it clear that he wants to leave. Some reports stated that if the Cavs want to acquire Love they would have to send back a package involving Andrew Wiggins, the freakishly athletic 2-guard, but as of right now Cleveland isn't so sure if they want to trade Wiggins. And I don't blame them. Last rumours has it that the Cavaliers offered Dion Waiters, Tristan Thompson and some future draft picks in exchange for Kevin Love, but Minnesota is unwilling to discuss about the trade unless Andrew Wiggins is in it. So now people are discussing whether or not Andrew is worth keeping. Some say that he has star potential and it would be foolish to let him go, while others think that if the Cavs want to win right now they absoletuly have to get Love, because a trio of Kyrie-LeBron-Kevin would guarantee them a spot in the Finals. Well, here's my opinion.
The "Big 3's" in the NBA are great, we had Kareem, Magic and Worthy; Bird, McHale and Parish; Jordan, Pippen and Rodman; Duncan, Parker and Manu; Pierce, Garnett and Ray; and most recently LeBron, Wade and Bosh. Those are just a few of the Big 3's we witnessed in the NBA and each of them won at least one NBA Championship, so it's natural that GM's want to acquire 3 superstar players, because they think it's a recipe for success. But, is it really? I mean, sure you have a super team with potential to win multiple Championships, but how long is it going to last? Some Big 3's did create a true, dominating dynasty. I'm talking about the San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics(Bird-McHale-Parish), LA Lakers and Chicago Bulls. These teams dominated the league for years. Miami Heat's Big 3 played together for 4 seasons, and during that time they've made the Finals 4 straight times and won 2 championships together, but now with LeBron gone, their done. And the real reason LeBron left, in my opinion, is because the Heat were unable to get the right supporting cast for the LeBron, Wade and Bosh and that's because they made more than 60 mln$ a year combined, so the team had no cap space to sign a decent free agent. While the trio of superstars in San Antonio all agreed to take a major paycut in order to play together and still be able to win. So why are the Cavs still pursuing Kevin Love? He, most likely, wants to get paid BIG BUCKS, something around 20 mln $ per year. LeBron will make 22 mln$/year and Kyrie 18mln$/year throw in Love's potential contract and you've got 60 mln$/year for only three players! And I doubt that LeBron will take some huge paycut after this 2-year contract (he actually has NEVER been the highest paid player on his team, seriously, check it out: http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2014/07/looking_at_how_lebron_james_ha.html)
So I think that the Cavaliers should KEEP Andrew Wiggins. During the Summer League he looked really good. With Wiggins they have a shooting guard with unlimited potential, a second lockdown defender on the wing and tons of cap space they could use to sign very good role players, they already signed Brendan Haywood, Mike Miller and James Jones, so they are building a nice team in Cleveland. One player I think they should trade is Dion Waiters. He recently stated on Twitter that he will not accept a role coming off the bench, which is a shame, because in my opinion, he is a perfect heat-check guy, something like Jamal Crawford is on the Clippers. But unfortunately Dion's ego will not accept being a sixth man. There is still hope that LeBron and new headcoach David Blatt will be able to somehow obtain Waiters, but if they will fail, there is no reason to keep him there.
